I FEEL I must respond to the letter from P Young, 'Lest We Forget,' (LET, November 19).

While I agree that it is indeed sad to see a war memorial seemingly ignored, especially at Remembrance time, I must put across a few points for P Young to consider.

Firstly, don't blame the Royal British Legion. Remembrance is not the sole responsibility of the Legion. It is for every individual to contemplate and respond as they see fit.

Remembrance services and parades are generally the initiative of our civic leaders and are not organised by the local branch of the Legion.

The local branch of the Legion was probably engaged at the town's memorial service on Remembrance Sunday, so how can they be at every memorial in town?

Since you quite rightly raised this issue, perhaps you could organise a further memorial service by contacting local church ministers and asking them to participate, contacting the Royal British Legion for advice, organising help from family and friends and mayby laying a wreath yourself.

So please don't blame the ever dwindling ranks of the Royal British Legion. They do their best with what little membership they have.
