REDEVELOPMENT plans for Westleigh Park will transform it into a major attraction for local residents of all ages.

The park, which at present has none of the usual play facilities - and is mainly used as a dog exercising area - will be redeveloped in two phases.

Phase one will focus on security, background layout, paths, trees and some sports facilities. While phase two will see the installation of play equipment and the planting out of the area.

This is a great success for the Westleigh Community Partnership.

It was only through lengthy negotiations with the Parks and Leisure Department that the partnership managed to secure £20,000 from the council.

And after a successful bid to the Single Regeneration Budget Board, this figure was matched with money from the Coalfield Challenge, totalling £40,000 for the first phase alone.

The partnership was also successful in an application to the National Basketball Association, who in turn applied to the National Lotteries Board, for the funds to have basketball courts in parks across the country.

Outline plans for the park will be going to schools for the children of the area to have their suggestions and ideas taken in to account.

These plans will also be available to members of the public when it's on display at the Coalfield Challenge office within the Investment Centre, Bradshawgate, between December 9-13, 9am-5pm.
