POVERTY, war and family crises in the 17th century were brought to life by two teachers when they donned the dress of the era for a history lecture.

Irene Lizzie Jones came as a peasant and told of the struggles and problems of a housewife, and Neil Howlett was a musketeer.

They are history lecturers for a group of people studying a 17th century history project on a Workers' Education Association course at St James' School, Clayton-le-Moors.

Student Geoff Taylor said: "They really made the lecture interesting.

"They told us about the things you don't always learn in class, such as how many children family's have, women in society and life expectancy."
