REGARDING the remarks of C A Bakewell calling for the clearing of the names of soldiers of the 1914-18 war, who were charged with cowardice and desertion in the face of the enemy, I can find no excuse against this charge.

Every man had to watch his friend's back from attack.

In 1943, quite a few deserters from the 8th Army went around Albany Barracks cleaning drains, etc. A few I spoke to bitterly regretted their desertion and the lifetime of condemnation which would follow their action. It also left their families stained.

My young brother was killed in action aged 18 in 1941 and he served in three different battle zones before his death.

I pity the individuals attempting to change the charges. I also thank God I never challenged the army rule in action.
