LEIGH RU kept their heads to beat higher-ranked Oldershaw 13-7.

And it was all down to team commitment and superb tackling.

They forged ahead with two penalties from Mark Hudspith, keeping command despite losing out in the line-outs. Then Jim Bridge outpaced the centre to score under the posts, Hudspith adding the goal. Leigh spent most of the second half on defence, but ended a fine match on attack.

Philip Robinson had a marvellous game in the second row while full-back Chris Lee - a stand-in for Matthew Brown, who was on duty for Lancashire - was the pick of the backs.

On Sunday (2.30pm) Leigh are at Ormskirk in the Lancashire Trophy.

Leigh U16s beat Rossendale 12-0 with tries by Gorski and Parkinson. In a fine performance there was some excellent play by Hunter, Magenty, Hampson, Howard, Bates, Sale and Coombes.

Leigh U10s beat Rossendale 55-0 with tries from Sutcliffe (his first for the club), Cunningham, Pirrie 3, Crompton 3 and Vernell 3.

Leigh U9s beat West Park 50-0 and Sedgeley Park 55-5 with Steven O'Brian named MOM for his four tries. Tries also from Peter Simm 7, Thomas Leake 3, Thomas Baker 4 and Danny Hollins.

CULCHETH RU returned to winning ways as they beat Liverpool St Helens 4ths 17-5.

A barnstorming try by Tubby Welsby capped a fine show, with Parr and Waterhouse also crossing for touchdowns.

On Saturday Culcheth face Montell at Shaw Street.
