GOLDEN SHOT Winston Sarsfield broke Lock Lane's heart.

The Leigh Miners goalkicker was in prime form as Miners reinforced their position at the top of the National Conference with a gritty 21-16 triumph.

Lane battered the home side in the opening quarter, despite some good work by Gary Grainey who obviously enjoyed the timing and accuracy of a succession of smart passes from Stuart Pugsley.

From 4-0 down Miners finally broke clear with Martin Lee, Mark Sanderson and Tony Dowling combining to send Sarsfield in for a try which he improved.

Another Sarsfield penalty extended it before the Castleford side battled back to lead again at 10-8.

Steve Topping then found a gap, chipped over the defence, and touched down. Miners 12-10.

Back came Lock Lane for 16-12. But that was their final shout. A Sarsfield penalty closed the gap before Matt Irwin blasted 25 metres for the match-clinching try. Sarsfield added the goal and then chipped in with a drop for a personal points haul of 13 points.

On Saturday (2.30pm) Dudley Hill are at Twist Lane.

Miners A defeated Crosfields 44-10 - and the Miners Rangers combination, in their inaugural year, now top their respective tables at the treble.

But victory came at a price, Jamie Baldwin dislocating his shoulder.

Tries came thick and fast from centre Howard Newton 3, Mark Lang 2, Jason Seddon, Steve Wood, Terry Sutton and Stuart Wilkinson. Full-back John Davies added two goals.
