BEDDING and cabinet furniture maker Silentnight is negotiating to buy a rival company for around £5 million.
Colne-based Silentnight wants to buy Meredew Cabinets, near Barnsley, from its parent company the Spring Ram Corporation.
The East Lancashire giant hopes to complete the deal by the end of December.
Meredew has a 12-acre site in South Yorkshire manufacturing cabinet furniture for both the bedroom and living room.
It uses similar technology to Silentnight's cabinet division.
Silentnight is one of the largest makers of assembled cabinet furniture in the UK.
It posted a turnover in the division of £54 million in the last financial year.
Its cabinet-making operation has grown by around 15 per cent each year for the past five years.
And the company sees Meredew as an ideal way of providing additional production capacity.
Silentnight says demand has been strong throughout the year for both its bedding and cabinet businesses.
