A TEAM of divers from St Helens got more than they bargained for on an expedition in the Forth of Clyde when they uncovered the remains of the only fatality of a shipwreck which happened more than 90 years ago.

The seven members of the Northern Union Sport Diving Club - John Lee, Keith McDonald, Vinny Mather, Joe Walker, Roger Buckner, Mike Kilgallon and Ron Mahoney - who meet at Parr baths every Tuesday, were filming in the Forth of Clyde for a diving video when they discovered the human remains on the wreck of the Greenock which sank in 1902.

The team handed over the video of the remains to Strathclyde Police and they confirmed that the bones were human.

And on Monday (December 9), Ron Mahoney will join the Strathclyde police underwater search team to film them recovering the remains, which are believed to be those of 16-year-old William Roger the son of the ship's chief engineer, who was the only casualty of the ill-fated vessel.
