A VILLAGE headteacher who was investigated following an alleged incident involving classroom discipline has been allowed to return to school by governors.

Philip McDermott went on paid leave of absence after the half term holiday following an allegation involving a boy pupil at St Paul's CE School, Baynes Street, Hoddlesden.

He was questioned by officers from Lancashire police's family protection unit, but the case was dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service last week due to insufficient evidence.

Governors have also announced they will not be taking any further action, and have thanked parents for their continued support during the investigations.

Chair of Governors, the Rev David Beal, said: "All schools have internal mechanisms for dealing with complaints which ensure that they are fully investigated and, where necessary, appropriate action is taken.

"Such procedures are undertaken in consultation with officers from the LEA and the Diocese, and remain completely confidential."

Mr McDermott, who returned to school yesterday after staying away for more than a month, would not comment.
