YOUNG "greenies" on the Fylde are invited to enter an exciting competition run by British Telecom.

The competition entitled the BT Young Naturalist of the Year Awards 1997 is in it's fourth year and is being organised by the Young People's Trust for the Environment and Nature Conservation.

Children aged eight to 13 can submit a project on any topic covering an environmental, wildlife, conservation or ecological theme and can be presented in forms as diverse as written research, drawings, photography, models, video or song.

Last year more than 20,000 children participated in the competition and the winning entries included individual and small group efforts as well as projects undertaken by entire school classes.

The entries included topics such as a biological study of a school pond, an environmental poster collage and a project describing a wood illustrated with poems and sketches.

The winners of the next year's competition will receive £500 for their school and an exclusive trophy at a ceremony in June 1997.

Cyril Littlewood, founder and director of the Young People's Trust, said: "The awards give young people a chance to express themselves and an opportunity to discover more about the natural world and how to protect it.

"The competition is linked to the national curriculum which enables teachers and pupils to work together."
