THE SURGE in profits announced by United Utilities has led to calls for action against the company from Louise Ellman.

The Lancashire County Council leader believes the extra money made by water and electricity company should be used to fund schemes for the unemployed.

The company, which owns Norweb and North West Water, last week announced a 34 per cent leap in profits in the first six months of the financial year. The final figure comes to £223.9 million before tax.

Mrs Ellman said: "United Utilities' announcement emphasises the case for a windfall profits tax on the privatised utilities to fund a programme of employment for young people.

"The unacceptable face of privatisation of public utilities in the North West has meant the formation of private monopolies like United Utilities, acting against public interest."

Mrs Ellman added: "It is unacceptable for excess profits to be made and top salaries to rise by over 600 per cent while thousands of jobs are lost and householders face a 74 per cent increase in water bills with prepayment meters threatening cut-offs for those in need.

"I call on the regulator to take action in the public interest."
