A FOUNDRY is setting companies across the country a good example.

The RHP Bearings factory in Blackburn is featured in a new publication launched by the Departments of Trade & Industry and the Environment as part of a green initiative.

RHP is currently working towards becoming the first foundry in the world to achieve the international environmental management systems certificate ISO14001. "We are very proud of our environmental achievements," said the factory's health & safety manager Bob Tormay.

"We have found good environmental practice has reduced our annual costs by £87,000 and still see opportunities to improve."

Improvements brought in by RHP include reducing consumption of a fluid used in metal cutting and better management of waste skips.

"RHP provides is with an excellent example of good practice in the foundry industry - something we are very keen to promote," said Aidan Turnbull, environmental practice manager for the new Government initiative.
