SHOPKEEPERS across East Lancashire were put on alert after a series of raids at post offices.

Police believed a gang had been "staking out" branches in order to pick the right moment in the run-up to Christmas.

They included a tea-time raid at Hoddlesden, Darwen, when £5,000 in £20 notes was stolen from a post office van parked outside the village sub-post office.
