BLACKBURN with Darwen Council has rescued of a boys' football tournament.

The competition this weekend, organised by Blue Star Youth Football Club, was set to be cancelled after travellers moved onto the planned venue, Feniscliffe playing fields.

The club faced having to tell 700 youngsters - including some from Coventry and Liverpool - that the games were off.

But club secretary Jane Murphy said: "Thanks to the council it is going to be held at Blacksnape playing fields in Darwen.

"My husband Eddie, who founded the club, has been to have a look and they have laid out all the pitches for us. He said it is like a little Wembley!"

The club still needs some referees to help out on Saturday afternoon. Anyone who can help should ring 01254 706735.

Feniscliffe playing fields are owned by St Wilfrid's High School, which is believed to be taking steps to move the travellers.
