THE young and the young-at-heart rallied round to raise cash for Preston's Lancashire and Lakeland cancer unit.

Pupils from Fulwood and Cadley CP School in Preston caused a splash when they totted up five miles in the swimming pool.

Pal Katie Cammish couldn't join in as she has arthritic knees, but that didn't stop the youngster playing her part in the fund-raising effort. She took on a mental challenge and devised a mammoth spelling test featuring 50 tough words.

The girls, all aged ten, raised almost £300. Headteacher Keith Johnson was impressed and said: "They had the idea and organised everything themselves, including sponsorship and sorting out swimming lanes at Fulwood Leisure Centre."

Meanwhile, lady bowlers delivered a £500 cheque to go to the cancer unit at the Royal Preston Hospital.

The female section of the Fulwood Conservative Bowling Club, Preston organised a fund-raising doubles competition to round off the crown green season.

Joyce Sergeant, of the Fulwood club, said: "Cancer touches most women. We all know somebody affected by the illness and we wanted to help a local charity."
