Bramwell speaks out

LANCASHIRE are faced with filling another key post following Mike Watkinson's decision to jump out of the frying pan.

And all the talk is of Wasim Akram being a logical replacement.

On the face of it the Pakistani captain would seem an ideal choice.

But I believe the county needs a period of on-field stability that Akram cannot provide.

Not only is there still a major question mark over his fitness, currently under scrutiny during their home series against South Africa, many also question Wasim's commitment.

Episodes of late arrival for the English season have not exactly painted a picture of a burning desire for the county game.

Wasim is also due a benefit next year.

That can be a burden for any player on top of the daily grind of the county circuit and his longer term future at Old Trafford is unclear.

And, although never one for blind traditionalism, shouldn't the captain of Lancashire at least be a Lancastrian? No-one would expect a Mike Atherton or Mark Taylor to add to the responsibility of captaining their country by taking on such an exacting appointment.

There are also arguments against a number of other popular choices.

Neil Fairbrother had his chance before Watkinson and a return would be a backward step. John Crawley has all the credentials but his likely England involvement would again break the continuity vital to a successful leadership campaign.

Another with the necessary background on top of proven ability - Jason Gallian - has been allowed to slip through the net, moaning at his lack of involvement in team matters.

Watkinson has reigned during a tricky period, with rumours of wavering support from some senior quarters, and has silverware in the cabinet to show for his efforts.

The ideal candidate would therefore need to command the backing of the whole side.

He needs to have experience, the necessary communication skills and his place in the side must be beyond question.

My choice might raise a few eyebrows.

But Warren Hegg has rosy red blood running through his veins.

On the winter A tour to Australia last winter he demonstrated a new maturity in his game.

And Hegg is one of the most popular figures at Old Trafford.

That to me seems an ideal combination of qualities that is difficult to match.
