STRIKER Chris McCabe had a right royal Saturday.

The 16-year-old banged in four goals as Lion Inn thumped Second Division Leigh Phoenix B 5-0 in the Coronation Cup.

Gary Hogan was also on target in the first major knockout trophy of the Leigh & District Amateur League season.

Holders Leigh Eagles matched that 5-0 scoreline, beating Union Arms (also Division Two) with goals from Clinton Andrews 2, Greg Anderson, Mark Toothill and Jimmy Rowe.

Britannia recorded their first win of the season, beating Leigh Victoria 3-2 with goals from Brian Twist 2 and Steve Hewitt; Kevin Bretherton and James Davies replied.

Mel Buck maintained his scoring record for Queens, but they lost 4-1 to Church Inn (still unbeaten in league and cup), who scored via Paul Millard, Wayne Woods 2 and Peter Hough.

Last season's runners-up Royal Oak swept through 8-0 against Leigh Arms, Paul Cottrell grabbing a treble.

Only upset was Ellesmere's extra-time 3-1 win at Atherton Tigers, who hit the crossbar in the time added on, then slackened and fell to two late strikes. Curt Cooper scored for Tigers, John Yates 2 and Steve Brady for Ellesmere.

In the only Division One game, leaders HF Village Inn trailed 2-1 at Rileys at the interval but then got it right to win 10-2, their biggest victory of the season. On target: Neil Clayton 3, Adrian Darwin 3, Geoff Myers 2, Colin Ridings, Damien Stones for Village, Matthew Franks and Andy Veldon for Rileys.

On Saturday Village, now five points clear, face second-placed Church Inn. Both unbeaten!

In Division Two Butchers lost their unbeaten record, stumbling 1-0 at HF WMC, John Battersby on target.

Ross's put an indifferent start to the season behind them with a 7-2 win, Neil Mason, Paul McCormack, Greg & Craig Guest, Tommy Hollywood, Danny & Alan Lomas sharing the seven, Pauls Wilkinson and Noone scoring for Napier.
