LEIGH'S chip shop poets are to meet the public this month to chew the fat.

As part of the Metro's poems in chippies project being carried out throughout August by poets Peter Street and Steven Waling, together with local history officer Tony Ashcroft, three afternoon get-togethers have been organised in local libraries.

The trio want to hear chip shop memories: how they used to be, what they meant and how they've changed.

The stories will form an all important part of the scheme to put poetry in chippies to celebrate National Poetry Day in the borough on October 8.

The threesome met fans in the Turnpike Centre, Leigh, yesterday; next Wednesday they are at Ashton Library and on August 19 at Beech Hill Library (both 2pm).

Tony, based at Leigh Library, is also interested in hearing reminicencies about the first self-service grocery shops and the first supermarkets to appear in the area, particularly Leigh.
