GREENS gave the thumbs-up to a Yorkshire busway.

But they reckon the Leeds Busway bears no comparison to proposals for the Leigh area.

Local transport planners travelled to Leeds to investigate the city's guided busway and Green Party members followed up with a further peek.

Greens' spokesman Chris Maile said: "The whole concept of the Leeds Busway is that which we have been promoting using existing roads and a new busway, all using existing roads, whereas the Leigh project would be along what are now footways and bridleways.

"The present proposals will destroy a widely used public footpath and wildlife corridor saving at best 10 minutes on a full journey time and untold misery to thousands of residents along the route.

"Yet it will end at the most congested point of the route to Manchester.

"Let GMPTE admit they got it wrong, scrap the plans and start real consultation on what local people want in public transport."
