A NATIONAL charity boss called for urgent action to halt a wave of sickness and death sweeping the Rossendale Valley.
Mr Alick Miskin, national organiser of the Meningitis Trust, highlighted the area as one of the worst in the country for the deadly disease.
He said that so far in 1988 there had been 12 cases in the area - six times the national average. Mr Miskin called for an urgent education programme.
