THOUSANDS of fish in Lancaster Canal at Carnforth have been poisoned.

Between 3,000 and 4,000 fish has been found dead in two stretches of the canal and experts are desperately trying to keep the remaining fish alive.

It is thought the heavy rain has washed pollutants into the water and ecologists are busy re-oxygenating the canal. Specialist teams from the Environment Agency and British Waterways worked through the night to stabilise the problem while investigations are under way.

Course fish populations of pike, roach, perch and bream are among those poisoned. An Agency spokesman said: "We estimate that up to 4,000 fry have died and there are still a number of fish in distress."
