MEDICAL tests are to be carried out on a Viagra-style tablet, after the Citizen revealed it was being sold at as adult shop.

Following our special report two weeks ago, Trading Standards have launched an investigation into the 'Viagrex' pills - which the Corporation Street shop claimed had the same effect as the impotence 'cure' Viagra.

According to a shop assistant, the round, white tablets were being imported from America.

But officials at Trading Standards, in Guild Hall Street, have bought two of the tablets and intend to carry out forensic tests on the drug.

Chief Trading Standards officer Jim Potts said the tablets will be scrutinised to see if the claims made by shop staff are true.

He added: "The tablets we bought last week are due to be sent to the Medicines Control Agency in London, who will carry out a detailed forensic analysis of what the tablet contains.

"What action we will take depends on the results of these tests, which could be back in about a week."

Mr Potts added that there were still concerns about the sale of the pill, which cost one of his officers £15 each.

He added: "Viagra is not authorised to be on general sale as yet so if it is 'genuine' in that it does do what it says, we will be looking into why it is on sale so freely.

"The claims made by the pill are quite explicit and that raises concerns on our part.

"We continue to advise people not to take it because it is not a registered pharmaceutical product."

The poster announcing the arrival of Viagrex has been removed from the shop window following our report. No one from the shop was available for comment.
