Morecambe 165-9 Lancaster 166-8 THERE was a pulsating finish to the derby match at Woodhill Lane where Morecambe's last pair of Neil Jordan and Gareth Pedder ended up just two runs short of victory as Morecambe finished with a losing draw.

Put in to bat, Lancaster realised a moderate 166 for 8 from their allotted 50 overs. David Heywood and Lancaster's South African professional Andrew Lawson added 33 runs for the first wicket before the latter was bowled by Neil Jordan for nine. Phil Dennison was next out with the score on 57, caught and bowled by Jordan for 13. The third Lancaster wicket fell at 73 when Luke Phillips was trapped lbw by Jordan for nine. His father Brian also perished when he had made 9, caught by Steven Pope off opening pace bowler Peter Stephens.

Heywood and David Derham put on 47 for the fifth wicket before Derham was caught by Kevin Demain off Stephens for 15. Lancaster's sixth wicket fell at 148 when David Jolleys was caught by Mark Woodhead off Stephens for 8.

Brendon Hetherington was run out for one and Craig Atkinson was out for three on the last ball of Lancaster's innings. Half the Morecambe side were dismissed for 122 when Pope was caught behind by Brendon Hetherington off Ledward for 57. His innings lasted 129 minutes and hit five fours. Morecambe's sixth wicket fell at 148 when Gulan Maje was bowled by Jolleys without troubling the scorers. Amazingly, both sides lost their sixth wicket at the same total. Damian Gudgeon was run out for 8 as Morecambe looked to accelerate their scoring leaving them 150 for 7. Peter Stephens was run out for four and Kevin Demain for two, leaving the home side 164 for 9.

This Saturday sees Lancaster playing hosts to Chorley at Lune Road. Chorley were surprisingly beaten at home last Saturday by lowly Blackpool, so if David Heywood and Andrew Lawson are in fine form Lancaster should take some points. Morecambe travel to Leyland. Leyland had Kendal struggling with their last pair at the wicket for a losing draw and beat leaders Leyland Daf in their last home game.
