TWO long-established Burnley firms of solicitors have announced they are to merge.

On September 1, Currie and Sons will join with Burnley's oldest-established solicitors, Southern Cooper and Partners.

Clive Currie said he and his partner, his brother Ian, were enthusiastic about the merger.

There are many changes taking place in the legal profession, particularly concerning legal aid and a larger firm offered opportunities for expansion and greater use of modern technology, they said.

Their firm was established by their father almost 70 years ago.

"We recognise that the provision of legal services cannot stand still and we are moving to take advantage of all that is offered by new products and technology," said Clive Currie.

"We see them as an exciting and challenging development in the law."

Stuart Mason, senior partner of Southern Cooper and Partners said he was delighted to welcome Ian and Clive Currie to the practice.

The new firm will have offices in Bank Parade and Hargreaves Street.
