AIRPORTS firm BAA, headed by former East Lancashire boss Sir John Egan, has reported the busiest month ever in July as millions of passengers rushed to escape the gloomy weather.

The firm said passenger numbers jumped up by 9.2 per cent on last July to a bumper total of 11.2 million, with 402,000 passengers passing through on July 31 alone - the busiest day recorded.

Favourite destinations were in continental Europe, where scheduled flights rose by 11.2 per cent.

The Republic of Ireland also proved popular, with traffic up 16.2 per cent, while the North Atlantic passenger count rose by 11.3 per cent.
