AN initiative to help Lancashire's clothing and textile industry has been unveiled.

The Clothing and Textile Network will encourage firms in the county to work together to compete on a world stage.

"The textile industry in Lancashire has continued to decline over the past decade due to increasing global demands, the impact of new technologies and rapidly changing customer needs," said Sharon Stopford, manager of the new network.

"The network is a real opportunity for the industry to make a co-ordinated effort to raise its profile and approach the future with a planned strategy for success."

The network - set up by the University of Central Lancashire and Preston Council - will collect market intelligence and help firms develop new products and break into new markets.

And it will aim to strengthen links between local manufacturers and high street retailers.

"The long term vision is for the Clothing and Textile Network to become a national centre of expertise undertaking academic research and commercial activities as well as attracting funding from a variety of courses."

The network can be contacted in 01772 892248.
