AN MP is calling for a new turn-off on the M6 near Preston in an attempt to beat congestion through a village.

Ribble Valley's Nigel Evans is calling for a diversion between Junctions 32 and 33 to cut heavy traffic on the A6 towards Barton.

He has written to Gordon Johnson, chief executive of Lancashire County Council, demanding action.

"Much of the traffic which goes through Barton and its surrounding areas is unnecessary.

"Many vehicles have no option but to use the A6 through Barton as there is insufficient access to and from the M6.

"By introducing a new junction between 32 and 33, Barton would be rid of much of the traffic which causes extra pollution, noise and danger to pedestrians.

"Transport Secretary John Prescott's announcement that the government favours less building of by-passes means a new junction is the only solution," he said.

The busy stretch of road is often used by commuters travelling to and from work.
