POLICE are appealing for witnesses who may have seen two conmen working in Haslingden Road, Rawtenstall.

They talked their way into the home of an 84-year-old woman and stole £600 cash. DC Anwar Mahmood, of Rossendale CID, said: "This theft was particularly nasty. These men just picked on a very vulnerable person."

The men claimed to be working on the next door property and asked the pensioner if they could enter her home to turn off the water supply. One went with her into the cellar and asked her to stay there until he told her to come back up the stairs. The old lady waited for 10 minutes until the man told her to come back into the main part of the house. When they left she discovered the cash was missing.

Both men were in their twenties. The first was 5ft 3in, slim, clean shaven and wearing a thin blue sweater. The second was also slim and wore a short dark work coat, possibly denim.

Police are also renewing appeals to people not to let strangers into their homes without identification. POLICE are appealing for witnesses who may have seen two conmen working in Haslingden Road, Rawtenstall.
