LEIGH RMI have moved into second spot in the Unibond Premiership.

Their 2-0 win at Whitby Town was their fourth victory on the trot.

And it came despite losing the League's leading marksman, Neil Matthews, after only 10 minutes with a recurrence of a groin strain.

Dave Felgate dominated his net as Whitby dominated the first half. "We were sluggish and gave away a lot of possession," said manager Steve Waywell, who read the riot act at the break.

"We had showed them too much respect," he added. "But in the second half we responded well and looked a different side."

The opening goal came on the hour. A long Stuart Locke throw-in was deflected onto the bar by a Town defender, and Keith Evans was on the spot to score his fifth goal of the season.

Lee Cryer, substituting for Matthews, grabbed the second 13 minutes later. Dave Ridings gained possession before lifting the ball into the path of Cryer who made no mistake for his first goal of the campaign.

Waywell added: "We are now up there to be shot at. The pressure will certainly be on, but we need to keep our feet firmly on the ground.

"We have scored 12 goals in our last four games. But, even more pleasing, was the way our back four performed, and keeping a clean sheet shows an understanding at the back is now developing."

LEIGH ATHLETIC dug deep to grab a 2-2 draw at Walshaw Sports Club.

Missing five regulars through injury and suspension, they squandered a series of chances before falling behind. Then Johnny Knowles set up a header for Richard Scott. Athletic went behind again but grabbed a point through Andy Pickles.

Jimmy Evans and Richard Scott were the pick of the side.

HINDSFORD crashed to a 3-1 defeat at Manchester Royal, Matt Toone hitting the solitary goal.
