ONCE again a residential home is threatened with closure and where are all the supporters and protesters? Conspicuous by their absence!

For months now the local papers have been busy with the Blobby fiasco and traffic problems in the city.

But where are all the letters of support for the residents of Fair Elms and the other homes threatened with closure?

This is just as important an issue and maybe more so. Because if the council can do this with hardly any protests then where will they stop. In 1993 the Laurels was closed and now it's happening again because people sit back and say "it does not affect me." But what about the future? We will one day "the elderly" ourselves.

If they have plenty of support now then the councils, central government and so on will think twice because the old people won't be so vulnerable. We all have parents or grandparents, do we want them to be treated like this?

We wouldn't like to be moved from our homes and friends against our will. Animals have people to support them because they can't speak up. Prisoners have also got plenty of supporters so where is the support for our elders? They fought for us, they gave their lives, many lost parents, husbands, sons, daughters. Some lost their sight or limbs so the least we can do is fight for them - So write letters of protest to the council and to the papers etc. Show your support because on day YOU will be old and who will speak for you then?

Points taken but to be fair we did report the closure first months ago and have had letters of support on these very pages. I would also point out that the decision is the county council's and not the city council's - Ed.
