I READ with some concern (Bury Times, Sept 11) about our council's future plans for safer cycling in the Bury Bridge and Bolton Road area.

Shared footpaths and subways are not the answer: they will succeed only in bringing cyclists into conflict with pedestrians.

A good example of this is the Woodhill Cycle Route, one of our council's prime achievements as part of their Cycle Strategy.

I am aware of many altercations between cyclists and pedestrians over this short route and it really is not worth the hassle. In fact, it is easier to use the road and dodge the traffic!

Another joke is the dedicated cycle lane leading from Peel Way to Tithebarn Street. This is impossible to cycle on through the day, as we find it blocked solid with pedestrians who have taken advantage of free car parking at Tesco.

I must remind our planners that cyclists require their rightful place on the road and to travel in safety. If funds will not allow this then do not waste time and money on futile efforts.
