Cricket-crazy double lung transplant patient Tony Monks turned out against his normal club side - with a team of transplant success stories.

Tony, of Ribbleton, Preston, was determined to end the cricket season on a high note when he lead his Second Innings XI onto the pitch at Penwortham Cricket Club.

But, despite a close contest, Penwortham notched up 129 for 9 and Tony's side slipped behind with 127 all out.

It was the fourth year that Tony's transplant team - which comprises of heart, lung and kidney recipients - has turned out against his club side, Penwortham Select XI.

This season spin bowler Tony, who received a double-lung transplant at Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester five years ago, has taken 16 wickets in Sunday league matches.

He said: "I'd like to make the Second Innings XI a permanent team, which meets regularly. Unfortunately we missed out on Sunday, but it was a very close match."

Ann Stuart, Wythenshawe New Heart - New Start Appeal manager, said: "Success stories such as these emphasise the continuing demand for donor organs. Without the generosity of donor families, transplant operations would simply not be possible."
