Traffic calming schemes in several Preston and Leyland accident blackspots have been approved by the county's highways and transportation committee.

Traffic turning left and right into Lightfoot Lane, from Tom Benson Way, Preston, will be stopped to improve safety at the dangerous junction.

Work on the £13,000 scheme will start this autumn.

Pedestrian islands will be created in Ribbleton Avenue, Preston, close to the methodist church, to slow speeding traffic and help people cross the road.

The project, which will be started this autumn, costs £10,000.

Preston's Riversway slip road will be reduced to two lanes in a £12,000 scheme.

It is hoped the measures will slow traffic as they approach a 50mph bend in the road.

Cadley Causeway, Preston, will be narrowed to reduce traffic speeds in a £8,500 project, due to start this autumn.

Several alterations will be made to Miller Road and Pope Lane, in Preston, in a bid to slow traffic close to Ribbleton Hospital. The scheme will cost £10,500 and be completed this autumn.

Traffic calming measures costing £8,000 will help slow motorists and improve safety in Ribbleton Lane, Ribbleton Street, and St Mary's Street, Preston.

A cycle lane and a crossing specially designed for cyclists will be created in Stanifield Lane, Lydiate Lane and Preston Road, Leyland. The scheme, costing £6,000, will be started in autumn.

County councillor Richard Toon, highways and transportation committee chairman, said: "Many local communities have already benefited from our campaign, although I realise that there are still many problem sites we need to tackle.

"The county council is committed to ensuring that the funds we receive are used effectively, treating the maximum number of sites with poor accident records."
