THE final Saturday (Sept 12) of the Vaux Northern League cricket fixtures was something of a damp squib.

The week's heavy rain prevented any play in Blackpool's match at Kendal and also in four of the other five games.

Leyland Daf did manage to get in a short game against Lancaster but the points gained had no effect on the top-of-the-table standings.

Sadly, Blackpool equalled their worst ever season of 1994 by finishing next to the bottom, but the club's professional Marcus Sharp turned in an excellent performance with a league-leading 53 wickets.

The good new for Blackpool is that Sharp has re-signed for a second season.

Unfortunately, only the evergreen David Cresswell of the other bowlers could add much support with 30 wickets.

Batting really let the side down as only Paul Danson enhanced his reputation and his total of 375 runs is his best return at this level.

Netherfield retained the title that they won last year and Chorley were runners-up.
