For by then the Widnes side had established a 20-nil lead, thanks, mainly, to the experienced Chris Kelly.

He first sent Russ McGrath over for a fifth minute try and then added the conversion. Then a fine try from former Saints player Mike Riley had Heath reeling. Kelly added the extras.

Kelly turned the screw with two drop goals in three minutes.

The Kelly-McGrath partnership worked again, with the big prop forward claiming his second try. Kelly's conversion made it 20-nil.

Heath hit back after the break when Wayne Jackman scored twice in six minutes. First the big winger crashed over in the corner after great work from second-rower Darren Blanchfield.

The a superb move from the scrum involving Darren Harris and Martin Harvey sent Jackman in.

A Kelly penalty put Farnworth further ahead, but Heath came back when Blanchfield sent in impressive full-back Jamie Hill.

It brought Heath to within eight points with 18 minutes left.

But with five minutes left Kelly landed another well-struck drop goal.

But Heath would not throw the towel in and winger Mike Woods scored a great 60-yard try in the last minute.

Best for Heath were Blanchfield, Hill and Harris. Royton Rangers 30 Thatto Heath A 34 Heath's second string had to work hard for their third victory in a row. Paul Littler was a tower of strength along with Phil Southward and Alan Holmes. Holmes grabbed the game's first try to set Heath rolling.

And further touchdowns followed from John Punford, Nigel Morris, Si Davis, Neil Prescott, Ian Chisnall and Dave Moore. Stand-off Barry Ford kicked three goals.
