WE saw the agony and ecstasy of sport this week as two local champions had the honour of representing their country in the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur.

Boxer Lee Meiger, 20, formerly of Tyldesley (but representing Jersey) made a quick exit in the first round after being KO'd by a Northern Ireland featherweight in just eight seconds

The joy was there for all to see as Andrew Atherton, of Hindley, collected an England team gold medal in gymnastics along with an individual silver. But there was sadness for him too as injured twin brother Kevin, the national skipper, was left at home and lost out on the triumph.

All athletes have good and bad times, there is no shame in losing. At least they have been good enough to be chosen to take part, bringing kudos to their area, and that means a lot.

The Commonwealth Games may not represent the greatest contest, but our local competitors' chests must swell with pride to know that they have actually marched behind the flag of their country at an event which could put them on the next step towards world and Olympic glory. I hope so.
