WYRE Council is to prosecute a holiday park following an alleged swimming pool gas leak that put 25 people in hospital.

Some 50 swimmers and spectators - many of them children - fled the swimming complex at the Cala Gran Holiday Park in Fleetwood on April 8.

Victims suffered vomiting, dizziness and breathing problems, attributed by emergency services at the time to a leaking chlorine gas cylinder.

Thirteen sufferers were treated at Blackpool Victoria Hospital and 12 at Preston and Lancaster hospitals, though none suffered long-term problems.

Now Wyre Council is taking legal action against Cala Gran owners Bourne Leisure Group, alleging breaches of the Health and Safety at Work Act.

The case is due to open at Fleetwood magistrates court on October 7.

A Wyre Council spokeswoman said the action was being taken following a comprehensive investigation by the council's environmental health service unit.

Cala Gran general manager Gordon Walker said he could not comment until the case had been through the courts.

However, the £1.4m pool complex, opened in 1994, has been operating as normal since the day after the incident, and, he added, "We pride ourselves on our safety record."

The popular 44-acre site houses 850 caravans and chalets, along with bars, restaurants and an open air pool.
