LANCASHIRE highways chiefs have unveiled a number of improvement schemes to make Fylde Coast roads safer.

Around £46,000 has been set aside to target accident blackspots in Fleetwood, Cleveleys, Lytham and St Annes with work due to start within the next few months.

Traffic calming measures are being introduced near St Mary's School in Blakiston Street, Fleetwood.

These will include footway build-outs, road humps and a zebra crossing to the tune of £8,000.

Also in Fleetwood, £7,000 will be used to make the Broadwater Station and Fleetwood Road junction more conspicuous.

This will mainly be achieved by coloured textured road surfacing and more signs.

The most amount of money, £12,000, will go towards providing right hand lanes along Rossall Road in Cleveleys from West Drive to Westmorland Avenue.

In St Annes, the Church Road junctions with Kenilworth Road and the northern section of Alexander Road will be closed off to improve safety.

Finally, in Lytham rumble strips will be placed along Park View Road between Green Drive and Norfolk Road as well as raising drivers' awareness of the existing speed limit, the junction with Ballam Road and Lytham CE Primary School.

Announcing details of the schemes, Richard Toon, chairman of Lancashire's highways and transportation committee, said they were part of an on-going campaign to improve road safety in the county.

He added: "The county council is committed to ensuring that the funds we receive are used effectively, treating the maximum number of sites with poor accident records."
