A REQUEST to use Lytham Green for the annual club day fair has been refused by Fylde Borough Council.

Stanley Jones Cubbins currently holds a three year licence to hold his fair on a section of the Park View Playing Fields in Lytham, but found the conditions poor last year.

In a letter to Fylde Borough Council, he states: "No doubt you will have heard how bad the Park View site was due to the lack of drainage this year.

"I would like to try Lytham Green on a one-off trial basis and would be willing to fence the site all the way around if you feel that the site is acceptable.

"The drainage on the Green is far superior to that of Park View and I feel that the public who support the club day and the fair deserve a reasonable site to enjoy themselves."

But the tourism and leisure committee decided that the move would be unwise. The members' report said: "It may be considered that more nuisance would be caused by siting the fair on Lytham Green - there are no other events of this nature currently held there and it may be considered an inappropriate use."

Stanley responded: "Other events of this kind are held on the Green. Many, many years ago, before I was on the scene, the fair was held there and now there are vintage car rallies, a heritage fair and the lifeboat day all on the Green.

"I'm disappointed but we're still going to go to Lytham. A lot of locals think that we come, make a mess, then leave - that is not the case.

"We are told that we can put down peat or straw on the field - but we have to pick it all up afterwards.

"Seeing children ankle-deep in mud ruining their shoes is not amusing at all and it makes our job a lot harder.

"But Lytham is always very kind to us and we will be back somewhere - even if the Park View site is the only one we can use."
