POLICE have issued a warning about a bogus doctor doing the rounds in Morecambe following a number of complaints from women. The man has been visiting women in the Morecambe area over the past few days contacting them initially from "lonely heart" adverts in local papers. He calls himself Dr Eric David Andrew Giles and claims to work for the Morecambe Bay Community NHS Trust.

Detectives in Morecambe say he comes across in a very plausible manner, carrying around a number of medical instruments and having a good working knowledge of medical terminology. Officers believe the man has worked as a volunteer with the Lancaster Moor hospital and knows the Lancaster and Morecambe well.

Morecambe Bay Health Authority has confirmed that they are helping police with their enquiries.

A health authority spokesman said: "We have sought to discover whether this man was acting as a bogus doctor solely for credibility or to be involved in some form of clinical practice. We have been told by the police that he made an external examination of one woman but we do not believe at this time that he examined anyone else. Nor has he prescribed any medicines, altered prescriptions or performed any surgical procedures. It is believed that Mr Giles was a voluntary care worker at Lancaster Moor Hospital for about three weeks where he may have gained access to official letterheads.

The spokesman added: "We are co-operating with the police in their investigations and would urge anyone who feels they have had contact with this man to talk to Morecambe Police as soon as possible."

The man is described as white, 5ft 10ins tall very slim with grey hair and spectacles. He has a pronounced limp on his right leg and was last seen driving an 'R' registered Toyota Starlet Sportif, which is believed to be his own car. Anyone with information should contact the police on 63333.
