EXTRA improvements to air quality in St Helens should be on the way after the council has secured additional funding to buy the latest in air monitoring technology.
The new Mobile Air Quality Monitoring Station will provide detailed minute-by-minute information on local levels of major pollutants such as sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and other air particles. The technology will help the authority to carry out statutory reviews and assessments of air quality to meet the stricter requirements of the new Environment Act and the National Air Quality Strategy.
Current and predicted levels for the year 2005 will be estimated. If they breach targets then an Air Quality Management Area will be declared and a plan developed to reduce levels.
