A RADCLIFFE school of "many strengths", both inside and outside the classroom, has received praise from Ofsted inspectors.

But St Mary's RC Primary School needs to pull its socks up when it comes to teaching art and music.

Reporting inspector Mrs Carole Green thought the Belgrave Street school was "a well-led school" with many strengths that made good provision for its pupils.

She said: "The headteacher and staff provide an effective and caring learning environment, which is committed to nurturing and developing pupils' Roman Catholic faith."

Academically, the pupils meet the expected level of learning standards in most subjects, shining at mathematics and sciences.

Standards in art and music are said to be below the national average, due largely to an under-developed curriculum.

Of the children themselves the inspector said their attitudes to learning were very good. They enjoyed lessons, were keen to learn, and worked hard.

Teaching standards were found to be very high, although quality was found unsatisfactory in one in ten lessons. The inspectors thought there was more to the school than simply a place of learning. "It is an integral part of the parish," said Mrs Green, who described the school accommodation as very well maintained and well cared for.

While describing the pupils' moral, spiritual and social development in glowing terms, Mrs Green considered that they were not being given enough opportunities to understand and appreciate other cultures.

Generally speaking, it was thought the school gave good value for money.

Headteacher Mrs Mary Upton said: "I am delighted, but not surprised, that the inspectors thought very highly of our school, recognising and acknowledging its many strengths, especially our children's attainment and conduct."

She added: "Such a positive report is a great tribute to the dedication and hard work of staff, children and parents, and they will have just cause for celebration."

Adding his praise, the chairman of governors, Father James Manock, said: "I would like to thank and congratulate all of those responsible for such an excellent report - staff, children, parents, and all who are part of the community of St Mary's. It is well deserved."
