A GRIEVING wife today told how she battled in vain to give her headteacher husband the kiss-of-life after he suffered a fatal asthma attack while on holiday.

Andrew Worrall, 46, head of Townshouse Special School, Nelson, and his wife Pamela were enjoying a coach holiday in Hungary when they went to a folklore evening in the Lake Balaton area, 100 miles from Budapest.

The event programme mentioned there would be a horse and rider display, but Mrs Worrall said they never expected the show would be inside the small, enclosed restaurant, and only feet away from their table.

She said: "Andrew was perfectly healthy when he entered the restaurant but was dead 30 minutes later.

"He started to suffer an asthmatic reaction to the horse, went outside and took his inhaler. I have never seen anything like it.

"I gave him the kiss of life and so did the ambulance people when they arrived but it was too late."

Mr Worrall's father John, a retired Thwaites worker who lives in Blackburn, and his sister Glynis, a former teacher at Westholme School, Blackburn, have been left devastated.

Mr Worrall had been head of Townhouse since 1990 and was previously deputy head. He was planning to retire in November and spend more time working as a ranger in Wycoller.

He lived at York Fields, Barnoldswick, with Pamela and children Talika, 16, and Ben, 13.

Mrs Worrall, 44, said her husband's body was expected to be flown home on Sunday.

She is planning a funeral for late next week when Mr Worrall will be buried in Haslingden Cemetery, the town where he was brought up. ANDREW WORRALL
