STAN Ternent is poised to complete the signing of Frank Petter Kval and give the Norwegian keeper until the end of the season to prove he's got what it takes, writes PETE OLIVER.

Ternent has been impressed enough with Kval to sign him on a free transfer from Brann Bergen.

And once some paperwork with his club in Norway has been completed Ternent will get the chance to take an extended look at the player after handing Kval a contract until the end of the current campaign.

"There are a couple of loose ends to be tidied up but I don't foresee any problems," said Ternent who plans to wrap up the deal on Monday.

"I needed another goalkeeper.

"Craig Mawson is not experienced enough.

"And Tony Parks is on loan so I needed another keeper." Kval is not yet the finished article but Ternent, who proved his eye for a bargain when signing the £4 million-rated Bury keeper Dean Kiely from York City for £120,000 just over two years ago, believes he could develop the attributes to make an impact in English football.

"He has got something to work on and the deal hasn't cost us anything other than wages," added the Burnley boss.

"It's a good opportunity for him and, if it works out, it's good business for Burnley."

Kval has secured a contract after two trial spells at Turf Moor and is pleased to have won some time to state his case for a longer stay.

"It's up to me now to show what I can do," said Kval who has positive early impressions of the club.

"They are terrific players and everybody seems to take care of each other," he added. And Kval, who spent the last domestic season in Norway on loan with Fana, is aware that he still has a lot to learn before pushing for a first-team place.

"I will play in the reserves and really get to know English football.

"It's different from football in Norway. In England it's a much faster tempo.

"I will do my best and hopefully that's enough. It will help me become a better goalkeeper.

"The opportunities in Norway are not as big as they are in England. It's up to me to take the opportunity and I will train very hard," he said.

Kval follows a well trodden path of Scandinavian keepers into the English game.

And one of his first contacts was due to be former Brann team-mate Martin Hollund who is the number one at Third Division Hartlepool.

"I will give him a call today," said Kval who has another friend in the Burnley area - even if he does play for Blackburn Rovers!

Rovers defender Tore Pederson also played for Brann where Kval was nearing the end of his current contract.
