PORT Vale manager John Rudge may have turned his sights away from Andy Cooke after completing a scouting trip to Scotland earlier this week.

Rudge, who recently had an offer for the Burnley pair of Cooke and Glen Little rejected, was believed to have been watching Rangers reserve striker Steve Boyack in action against St Johnstone reserves.

The experienced Vale boss is looking to add some strikepower to his side after selling Lee Mills to Bradford City in the summer and had put Burnley striker Cooke at the top of his wanted list.

But his twin bid, believed to be of £1 million, fell short of the Clarets' valuation and it appears he may now be prepared to look elsewhere unless he can generate some more cash from somewhere.

BURNLEY will have an added incentive to prosper in the Auto Windscreens Shield when it kicks-off in December.

The competition for Second and Third Division clubs will feature a Performance of the Round award with one club per round, selected by a panel of judges, receiving a cheque for £1,000 to go towards their youth development scheme, a specially made trophy and 10 Mitre footballs.

KEVIN Henderson got back on the goal trail after a spell out with injury and illness when he had a run-out against Bury in the Football League's north-west conference.

Henderson, who returned to the first-team squad today, scored for the Clarets in a 1-1 draw.

EX-BURNLEY keeper Marlon Beresford, number two to Mark Shwarzer at Middlesbrough, tasted some first-team action again this week when he played in the Worthington Cup against Wycombe.

Beresford, who moved to Boro for £400,000 on deadline day last season, appeared in both legs of the Second Round tie and helped Bryan Robson's side to a 3-1 aggregate win.

ANOTHER Burnley old boy enjoyed an eventful night in the Worthington Cup before his side booked a place in today's Third Round draw.

Steve Davis, subject of a pre-season enquiry by Stan Ternent, scored for both Luton and Ipswich as the First Division side were knocked out at Kenilworth Road.

Team-mate Marvin John saved Davis's blushes after his own-goal had made it 4-4 overall by heading the winner with a minute left.

TONY Parks was beaten by a late goal as he started his loan spell with Barrow. The Cumbrian club were on target for only their third win of the season before Dover equalised two minutes from time.

FORMER Burnley player-manager Chris Waddle will make his debut for Torquay United at Halifax tomorrow after joining the Third Division club this week.
