TEENAGE pop with a difference is thriving in East Lancashire - thanks to a sister act who are a million miles from the chart sounds of the Spice Girls or All Saints.

Pendle girl guitar band Earl join two of the area's hottest acts at Burnley Mechanics this Friday for what promises to a feast of homegrown talent.

The promising three-piece, comprising sisters Ruth and Fiona Daniel and schoolfriend Lizzie Evans, play alongside Burnley favourites Cosmos and The Rubbish, both of whom are starting to generate interest within the record industry.

Earl, who mix soft vocals with jazzy rhythms and some inspired tempo changes, were a sensation at the fringe of the Colne Rhythm and Blues Festival last month and regularly play at the Lord Rodney in Colne.

The girls' highly original style also impressed judges at this summer's Battle Of The Bands at Chaplin's Bar in Burnley, and the band are currently working on a demo CD to try to catch the attention of record companies.

The girls see no reason why they can't hit the big time.

Ruth said: "We have been together for about two years, but it has just been this summer when things have started to take off for us.

"For the last three months we have been gigging in Pendle and we have built up quite a big following.

"When we did Colne Rhythm and Blues Festival we had the best gigs we have ever played.

"We got really positive feedback and we were asked to record a demo CD at a studio in Nelson."

Ruth, 17, and Fiona, 15, from Brierfield, and Lizzie, 17, from Earby, met two years ago when they were all at Skipton Girls' High School. Ruth is now studying A-levels at Nelson and Colne College.

Ruth said: "I can play the guitar and write music and I had written this song which had bad lyrics.

"Lizzie is good at that so she worked on the lyrics and then decided she would learn to play an instrument.

"Lizzie also learned to play guitar and then Fiona got in on the act and learned to play drums.

"We write all our own material. People say our music is like that of the '40s but funked up, very rhythm and blues. But we don't want to be pigeon-holed, we want to be seen as something different."

After their Mechanics appearance, Earl play the Lord Rodney on October 8. EARL POWER Guitar gals go
