DANCING the day away has always been a favourite pastime of John and Lily Bickerstaffe.

But for once the couple will sit down for a special meal with their family to celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary.

Lily, originally from Darwen, met John when she visited relatives in his home town of Kirkham.

They fell in love and married at St Cuthbert's Church, Darwen, in 1938.

They moved to Blackburn after the war where Lily ran a sweets and tobacco shop while John worked on the wholesale market and as a school caretaker.

John, 83, is a keen gardener but always makes time to take Lily, 85, dancing once a week.

He said: "We used to dance about three times a week but we've had to cut down these days now we're getting older!"

The couple, of Springfield Avenue, Cherry Tree, have a son, daughter and two grandchildren.
