HIGH winds brought a 40ft poplar tree crashing down on to the roof of terraced houses.

Residents in Oak Street, Burnley, were woken just before 4am today.

One of them said: "There was an almighty bang and the house shook.''

The tree, one of a line of six poplars in the grounds of Ightenhill Primary School, snapped at the base and fell across the back street, landing on the roof of a house which is for sale. Nobody was in the house at the time.

It brought down a telephone line and damaged others, although there appeared to be little damage caused to the house.

A woman next door said: "There was a big bang and the house shook. I am just hoping that the other trees are safe.''

Burnley Council was called in to move the fallen tree and check the condition of the other five.
