WORRIED councillors have asked to meet with Royal Mail bosses about their decision to close a Pendle sorting office and merge it with another on a new site.
The Royal Mail confirmed yesterday that it plans to shut the delivery office behind Colne Post Office and merge it with the Nelson operation in a new sorting office next to the existing one in Stanworth Road, Nelson, by next summer.
The decision shocked Colne councillors, who have called for urgent talks. "I will be seeking an urgent meeting with Royal Mail management to try and find out what effect this will have on services for people in Colne," said Labour councillor Tim Ormrod. His colleague, Councillor Ann Doult, added: "We have a good service locally and it seems that our service could possibly be hit."
The Royal Mail said the new site would offer a better service to customers, because the Colne sorting office was too small to handle the quantity of mail passing through it.
