FORTY years ago, I refereed a lot of local football matches.

Watching soccer on TV nowadays prompts me to ask present-day refs to explain why goalies are never penalised for carrying, why no foul throws are ever given, why at the kick off the receiver of the first touch is allowed to stand in his opponents' half, and why a goalscorer is permitted to leave the field of play to be mobbed by spectators and delay the restart of the match.

On the subject of cricket, the World Cup has reinforced my long-held view that the use of the more visible white ball would be the biggest single improvement to the game at all levels.
